About the Baton Rouge Rose SocietyThe Baton Rouge Rose Society is a non-profit organization, affiliated with the American Rose Society (ARS), and sponsor of the Botanical Rose Garden at Independence Park. Our society participates in many rose events including local and national rose shows, garden tours, pruning demonstrations, and rose sales. We partner with the Botanic Garden, BREC, LSU, the ARS and Burden to educate the public about the joys of rose growing. We are exploring new ways to use and enjoy roses in the landscape that reflect 21st century lifestyles. We are passionate about all varieties of roses, not just the stereotypical hybrid teas, but their ancestors, the old garden roses, and their descendants, the modern shrub roses. Many of these roses are disease resistant and will flourish in our hot, humid climate. We can help you select a rose that will become a focal point in your garden. We have many activities planned each year. We participate in the spring sales at the Botanic Garden in March and August and the Baton Rouge Garden Show at LSU. We sponsor a rose show or rose growing seminar in the fall. This January we are sponsoring the American Rose Society Gulf District Mid-Winter Conference at the Bruden Center on Essen Lane. Take time to visit the Independence Park Botanical Rose Garden. It is a cooperative effort by the Baton Rouge Rose Society, BREC and the Independence Park Botanic Council. At the garden, you will see the growth habits of all varieties of roses. There are the latest award winning Hybrid Teas, Floribundas, English Roses, and Miniatures along with many Old Garden Roses. Pictured below is the Peggy Martin Rose, an old garden rose which survived the Hurricane Katrina flood in Plaquemines parish. The Baton Rouge Rose Society meets on the second Wednesday of each month, except July and August, at the Independence Park Garden Center, at 7:00 P.M. We are anxious to share our interest in growing and exhibiting our national flower with everyone. If you are interested in learning more about growing roses in this area, please come to one of our meetings, call Allen Owings at 985.543.4125 or check with this web site.We welcome your participation as we honor the Rose - symbol of love, friendship, beauty, and peace.
